The Holiday Dompap Ornament
The Holiday Dompap Ornament
Join Kim for a fun little holiday ornament class; The Holiday Dompap. The Dompap (also known as a bullfinch) is a small finch that is associated with the holiday season in Norway, Sweden Denmark and Finland. This is a class that would be fun to paint with your children or grandchildren!
Traditionally, people put stalks of oats (the Yule Sheaf also known as the Julkärve or Julenek) out for the birds as a holiday treat. If the first bird to visit and eat the oats is a male Dompap it is a sign that your new year will bring goodness and prosperity.
DATE: Wednesday December 16, 2026
TIME: 1pm – 3pm Central Time
Materials List
The bird ornament is included in the cost of the class!! Nordic Canvas will mail out the ornaments about 2 weeks before class so you can have it backgrounded prior to class. If you want your ornament for class, please order before December 2nd to ensure time for postal delivery. You can still order the class after December 2nd but we can’t guarantee the ornament will arrive by class.
This class will be painted in acrylic but if you prefer to paint with oils, please join us!
Paints
Any craft paint will work for this ornament but below is a list of the JoSonja colors I used:
Carbon Black
Red Earth
Pine Green
Yellow Oxide
Napthol Red (for the berries)
Bridgeport Grey (ceramcoat brand)
Titanium white (I used a multisurface satin by Folkart)
Brushes
#2, #4 shader
#1 liner or midliner (JoSonja Sure Touch are nice, but use your favorites)
Stylus or tool you use to make dots
Brush for backgrounding your dompap
Mediums
JoSonja Flow medium is nice but optional
Other supplies
Palette Knife
Sandpaper
Transfer paper (A light blue is better than black on the white surface)
Tracing paper
Container for water (and medium if you use it)
Any other supplies you typically use
Ornament Preparation
Lightly sand prior to putting on 2-3 coats of your titanium white. Sand lightly in between coats. Trace on the pattern with the transfer paper and you’re ready to paint.
